The bell tower at First United Lutheran Church was erected in 1982 as a memorial to Rev. William J. Hoebel who served the church as pastor from 1939 until 1963.
Included in the design of the tower is a sculpture of a crowing rooster, "reminding all who hear the sound of our bell that in God's Messiah there is comfort for the sorrowing, strength for the weak, cheer for the downcast, hope for the despairing and fellowship for the forlorn." (A quote from the May 16, 1982 dedication service.)
The rooster is an artwork of Heri Bert Bartscht.
The bell was originally in the tower of the Cole Avenue church, and later was used in the current Parish Hall building, which served as the sanctuary until 1965 when the present sanctuary was dedicated. Subsequent remodeling of the balcony in the Parish Hall resulted in the bell being silent for many years.
The bell is rung each Sunday morning to announce the beginning of services. |
